In October 2017, the European Commission drew up an Action Plan to tighten protection from terrorist attacks in public spaces. The EU High Risk Security Network (EU-HRSN) created under this initiative connects police units in the EU Member States participating in the fight against this new terrorist threat.
The European Union-funded CT Public Spaces project, jointly implemented by the Guardia Civil and FIIAPP, is designed to prevent and reduce terrorist attacks and their impact on urban public spaces. Initially, three African countries will be given helped to strengthen their local ability to protect these spaces and infrastructures. This will be done by working with government and improving public-private cooperation in this sector.
The project will provide specific training in protection of public spaces, delivered by police officers in partner countries. The training will take place in Spain and in designated African countries, drawing on the experience of specialists from the EU-HRSN, as well as the expert skill of the Rapid Action Group of the Spanish Guardia Civil, which is part of this European network.
