One of the European Union's external action policies focuses on addressing the effects that natural catastrophes and human-made disasters have on people. The Directorate General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations DG ECHO focuses its efforts on protecting lives, alleviating the suffering of victims and safeguarding the dignity and integrity of affected populations.
In order for the southern Mediterranean region to improve in the prevention, preparation and response to natural or human-made disasters, the European Union finances this cooperation project led by Expertise France with the collaboration of CIVIPOL and FIIAPP.
Capacity-building, legislative and institutional advisory and support activities to cross-border cooperation frameworks will be carried out. All of them aligned with the new EU Civil Protection Mechanism Regulation (UCPM) and the guidelines issued by DG ECHO. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the capacity of the participating countries to develop and implement strategies for combatting disasters and their threats in order to strengthen the resilience of society.
