EUROCLIMA+ took part in the session dedicated to the Americas and the Caribbean, contributing its vision on Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE)
The EUROCLIMA+ programme was part of the session dedicated to the Americas and the Caribbean at the 8th Regional Dialogue of Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE), organised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The aim of these annual dialogues is to provide a forum for countries linked to the Convention and other interested parties to advance the ACE implementation agenda in line with Article 12 of the Paris Agreement. The ACE is a cross-cutting public policy proposal that seeks to create and coordinate skills that promote transformative action to tackle climate change, offering the depth and urgency that such a challenge requires.
The session focused on fostering partnership and cooperation on ACE matters, promoting regional knowledge sharing and highlighting good practices in order to better monitor and review the implementation of the Doha work programme. The programme was created to further the extent to which ACE fits within the Paris Agreement.
The European Union-funded EUROCLIMA+ programme was represented by Cecilia Castillo, Director of the FIIAPP-managed Climate Governance department who gave recommendations on the implementation of the ACE agenda in the region from the perspective of international cooperation, based on the programme’s experiences over the years that it has provided support in these countries. She highlighted the importance of piloting actions, providing specific examples of what the EUROCLIMA+ programme can contribute in order to promote the implementation of this agenda.
Through FIIAPP, the EUROCLIMA+ programme is currently working to support the design or reform of strategies, plans or measures for the incorporation of Action for Climate Empowerment in formal, non-formal and informal education processes, the inclusion of ACE elements (education, training, public awareness, public participation and access to information) in the processes of design and implementation of NDCs, national adaptation plans and long-term low emission development strategies, the development or strengthening of the design and implementation of national Action for Climate Empowerment strategies within the framework of UNFCCC guidelines, taking into account national circumstances and raising awareness of and promoting communication related to climate change.
