The headquarters of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey was the venue for the launch of the project “Support to the establishment of the Ombudsman institution in Turkey”. Spain, through the FIIAPP and with the participation of the Spanish Ombudsman and her French counterpart, is leading the initiative aimed at strengthening this newly created institution in this European Union (EU) candidate country.

The act was attended by more than 100 people and included the participation of the Spanish Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril; the President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Cemil Cicek; the Turkish Ombudsman, Mehmet Nihat Ömero?lu; the Turkish Minister of European Affairs, Mevlut Çavusoglu; and the Head of the EU Delegation, Stefano Manservisi. The FIIAPP was represented by its Director, Pedro Flores, and by the Director for Public Administration and Social Affairs, Agustín Fernández.
The project, financed by the European Union with over one and a half million euros, aims to support the establishment of the Ombudsman institution in Turkey in its initial phase of operations to develop a prominent body in line with EU standards and the Paris Principles. This institution was created in this Middle Eastern country in 2012 and has been in operation since March of 2013. Given its inexperience, it needs to improve its institutional capacity and train its staff.
The twinning project with Turkey, with a two-year planned duration, is being managed by the FIIAPP and is headed by the Spanish Ombudsman and the French Defender of Rights, two institutions that will share their experience with the new Turkish body in the defence of freedom and human rights and in ensuring transparency, justice and good governance.
