Training on gender approach training in research in Cuba

The Cuba-EU II Expert Exchange Programme, financed by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP, has organised a course to train the personnel of the Cuban National Institute of Economic Research (National Economic Research Institute (INIE)) in implementing agender approach to research. The activity, taught by the Andalusian Studies Centrepublic foundation, is part of a strategy aimed at ensuring equality and the promotion of women in the sector. 

Topics covered include questioning the assumptions, postulates and methods of the traditional research programme, the contributions of the gender approach to the new research programme, the gender perspective in the investigation of social realityand the main research techniques and their application in social problems. There has also been a focus on real research in which different social research techniques have been applied from a theoretical gender perspective. 

This activity responds to the aims of the National Programme for the advancement of Women, approved on 8 March in Cuba. This programme promotes actions aimed at achieving greater comprehensiveness and effectiveness in the prevention and elimination of manifestations of discrimination against women, as well as strengthening the mechanisms and professional capacity of civil servants and public servants to incorporate gender issues in the preparation of policies, programmes and the provision of services. The need to address the gender issue in Cuba is also included in the National Development Plan and in the 2030 Agenda, to which Cuba is firmly committed.  

  In this context, theINIE has identified the need to train its staff in gender matters to incorporate this approach into the various ongoing research projects, favouring more equitable analysis of the various economic and social issues relevant to the country and more egalitarian planning.
