As part of the 2019 World Disability Summit, Bridging the Gap has organized an event focused on migration and disability
Argentina hosted the ‘Migration and disability’ meeting organized by the Bridging the Gap, project, which is funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP and involved representatives from the Evalúa project and the Eurosocial+ programme, also funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP.
At the meeting, the needs and challenges faced by people with disabilities in migration contexts were explored, along with the lines of action that governments should promote to ensure assistance is provided, that their rights are being exercised, and other aspects that must be considered in developing protocols for comprehensive assistance of migrants with disabilities.
This event, held on 6 June in the city of Buenos Aires, enjoyed the collaboration of the International Disability Alliance (IDA), the Latin American Network of Non-Governmental Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and their Families (RIADIS), the Mexican Coalition of People with Disabilities (COAMEX) and Human Rights Watch .
Likewise, at this meeting held on 6 June in Buenos Aires, in addition to spreading awareness of the global context of people with disabilities with migrant or asylum-seeker status, implications were examined for people with disabilities in the migratory phenomenon in Venezuela and in the Mexico – Central American regional context.
As a result of the session, a declaration has been drafted on the protection of the human rights of persons with disabilities in situations of migration, asylum, refuge and forced displacement. This document also calls on governments to guarantee measures to protect and safeguard the human rights of migrants with disabilities, such as the creation of a joint strategy with international organizations for the collection of disaggregated data and statistical information on migrants, persons who have been granted asylum and refugees, from an age, gender and disability perspective making it possible to understand the interrelations between different population groups.
