EUROCLIMA takes part in a workshop in which the integration of gender aspects in climate action was addressed

The European EUROCLIMA + programme took part in the Regional Workshop on the Integration of Gender Aspects in National Climate Action in the Latin American and Caribbean Region, organised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), facilitating the discussion group on coherence and alignment of the countries’ work on the integration of gender aspects and climate change.
Within the framework of the Lima Work Programme on Gender, the secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is organising a series of regional workshops to discuss the integration of gender issues into national policies, plans, strategies and measures for climate change.
Some of the conclusions reached by working groups indicate that there are already a number of instruments that can be applied at a national level in the region, such as support for Nationally Determined Contributions, a commitment on the part of international community to reduce the gas emissions that cause the greenhouse effect. Nationally determined contributions represent each country’s efforts to reduce national emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change.
Such contributions favour the mainstreaming of gender and climate change aspects, in turn supporting the UNFCCC’s international mandate. In terms of programme coherence, it was stressed that there are still many challenges to be faced which depend on political will, budgets, as well as other structural problems and new scenarios that include the current Covid-19 pandemic.
To this end, the EUROCLIMA + project, which has European funding and in whose management the FIIAPP is present, promotes specific courses of action that increase climate ambition by supporting 18 countries in the region seeking to progress towards gender equality through the integration of the gender perspective in policies, national plans and other measures.
Gender equality has been at the heart of cooperation between the European Union and Latin America since the project was created, with a number of implementation strategies in place, such as the EUROCLIMA+ Gender Toolbox.
