Spain is to reinforce Colombia’s Early Warning System to prevent and mitigate the impact of natural disasters. Colombia’s Adaptation Fund is financing the project to the tune of over 1,300,000 Euros.

The International and Ibero-American Fund for Public Administration and Policies (FIIAPP) is managing a project in Colombia to prevent and mitigate the impact of natural disasters. Along with the FIIAPP, the Spanish State Agency of Meteorology (AEMET), the General Directorate of Water (DGA), the Centre for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (CEDEX), and the company Sistemas Avanzados de Tecnología, S.A. (SATEC), will also participate in the project.
The ultimate objective is to mitigate and prevent the risks of natural disasters, protecting the population from their economic, social and environmental impacts. The IDEAM’s Early Warning System will be reinforced and redesigned in a three-phase project: diagnosis of the situation, proposal for reinforcing the station network, the radar network, the Early Warning System, and the online platform, as well as the creation of technical conditions and specifications.
The IDEAM director, Omar Franco, acknowledged that “this project will not only change the lives of the IDEAM, but also the entire country, because it will use technical and technological infrastructure to implement the Early Warning System that Colombia needs for the processes of variability and climate change.”
This contract will have a duration of 6 months and will also establish a list of the reinforcement contracts of up to 247 existing meteorological and hydrological stations and up to 210 new stations, using the IDEAM’s studies as a basis. Technical support will be provided by the National Disaster Risk Management System.
