The Dominican Republic raises international migration standards

Specialists from the European Border Agency (FRONTEX)worked with the Dominican Republic’s National School of Migration (ENM)to support the training of migration officers and adapt to international standards.  

The ENM requested this assistance, and the activity was carried out through the MCBS-EUcooperation project financed by theEuropean Union in the Caribbean and managed by FIIAPP in collaboration with the IOM. It consisted of a review and providing recommendations to improve the training for the agents and border inspectors of the Dominican Republic’s General Directorate of Migration (DGM).   

The work has made it possible to verify that the content, variety and quality of the training received by these agents at the National School of Migration corresponds to the standards required of their counterpart border inspection agents in the countries of the European Union and at the international level.  

Potential shortfalls in the training programme for these agents were identified, and FRONTEX specialists suggested the necessary changes and the inclusion of new theoretical and practical subjects and content that should be included in training courses to bring the curriculum into line with current standards.  

During the training sessions, several working round tables were organised as an opportunity to share experiences. The specialists also visited a border post to see how the theory is put into practice.
