For two years the Spanish and French Ombudsman's Offices have worked with their Turkish counterparts to establish the Turkish Ombudsman's Office.
After two years of work, with a budget of over €1.5 million financed by European Commission, the cooperation project with the Turkish Ombudsman’s Office is coming to a close. The project, managed by FIIAPP with the collaboration of the Spanish Ombudsman’s Office and its French counterpart, the Défenseur des Droits, had the objective of establishing the Turkish Ombudsman’s Office.
The Spanish Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, led the closing event for the project, entitled “Support to the establishment of the Ombudsman Institution in Turkey”, which was held at the seat of the Turkish Parliament in Ankara.
As Soledad Becerril explained, the project objective was to “promote and foster action by Turkish public authorities to guarantee the rule of law, respect for human rights, transparency in public administration, and good governance”.
After these two years of work with Spain and France, the Turkish Ombudsman’s Office will now proceed on its own towards achieving its greatest challenge, making itself known to the country’s nearly 80 million inhabitants and becoming a respected, effective and independent figure.
