The project, which focuses on the transport of hazardous goods by road, supports the Tunisian legal framework in this area
Tunisia hosts the first meeting of SecTrans-NAS specialists with stakeholders in the transport of hazardous goods in Tunis. The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Technical Agency for Land Transport.
The objective was to establish an initial contact with all the institutions with an interest in the problem of transporting hazardous materials in Tunisia. In addition, we made efforts to publicise the scope of the project and to identify national contacts for a possible further strengthening of the legal framework and the implementation of various activities.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Tunisian Focal Point and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport. Both thanked the specialists of the European Union and SecTrans-NAS for the opportunity to strengthen national capabilities in this area.
Although Tunisia is a signatory to all the international agreements relating to modes of transport of hazardous materials, according to its representatives some additional efforts still need to be made in order to fully adapt national legislation to these agreements and strengthen the administration. The SecTrans-NAS specialists have demonstrated their willingness to contribute effectively to these efforts.
This meeting was an opportunity for SecTrans-NAS, a project funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP, to visit the Civil Protection facilities in Tunis and discover the possibilities of this institution for organising regional exercises.
Lines of work have been identified for the coming months, such as support for the future update of the City of Tunis traffic plan, which will include the circulation of vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
