The SecTransNAS project organises regional awareness workshops on the importance of safety in the transport of dangerous goods
Having regulations that guarantee safety in the transport of dangerous goods prevents accidents and protects people and the environment. The FIIAPP-led EU SecTransNAS cooperation project has organised awareness-raising activities aimed at the ministries that work with this problem, the actors in the transport chain (shippers, carriers etc.), the security forces (police and gendarmerie) and civil protection and customs officers.
The workshops were attended by people from Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, Morocco, Niger and Tunisia. The countries taking part have appointed local experts and representatives of the sectoral groups who will be in charge of replicating the information and materials shared during the conference in their respective countries. The medium- and long-term aim is to achieve a homogeneous space in terms of regulations and good practices that are in line with international agreements.
The specialists in charge of the workshop have proposed a series of awareness-raising tools and methods. In addition, issues were discussed that led to reactions and fruitful exchanges between countries that are already signatories to the ADR (an international agreement that regulates the transport of dangerous goods by road) and those that are working to become one at some point. The regional vision represents the basis of these exchanges of opinion.
The EU CoE CBRN initiative was launched by the European Union in 2010 to prevent, prepare for and manage CBRN incidents. These causes of these incidents can be criminal (trafficking, theft, proliferation, sabotage), accidental (industrial disasters, waste processing) or natural (pandemics etc.) This project promotes political and operational cooperation at a national, regional and international level.
SecTrans-NAS general aim is to guarantee the safe transport of chemical and biological substances by road in North Africa and the Sahel. In addition, there are a series of specific objectives such as supporting the development of the regulatory framework related to the transport of dangerous goods, improving logistics and dangerous goods transport planning and strengthening response capacities in the event an accident related to these types of goods occurs.
