A new project managed by the FIIAPP: “Institutional support for the Ministry of Public Works to increase the operational performance and competitiveness of railway transport” was launched in Kiev, the Ukraine, on 26 November.
The railway sector is especially important to the Ukraine’s economy as railways are the country’s principal means of transport, accounting for 80% of goods traffic and 50% of passenger traffic.
Railway sector reforms are currently being made inthe Ukraine. However, these reforms entail new administrative organisation that establishes which responsibilities will depend on the State and which will be the future railway company’s responsibilities.
The FIIAPP is heading a new railway sector reform project in the Ukraine, along with the Ministry of Public Works. Spanish experts from the General Directorate of Railways, ADIF, RENFE, INECO and the Spanish Railway Foundation, along with Polish experts from the Ministry of Transport and the Railway Institute, will work together to improve the country’s railway transport operations and competitiveness.
The project’s objectives include developing a competitive environment in the railway transport market, introducing European quality standards in transport services and creating a healthy investment climate for the sector’s development, for private and institutional investors as well as international financial institutions.
The project, financed by the EU to the tune of 1,800,000 Euros, will be rolled out over 21 months.
