It took place at the Regional Conference of the Internal Security Forces in the fight against trafficking and smuggling of migrants
The conference brought together the member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the European Union concerned about migration issues, through their institutions of cooperation in security matters. Both projects are financed by the European Union and managed by the FIIAPP.
The Directorate of Territorial Surveillance of Niger gave a presentation on the experience of the Niger ECI (Joint Investigation Team) underlining its operational success, good practices and the main challenges facing the project.
General Francisco Espinosa, director of the GAR-SI Sahel project (Rapid Action Groups for surveillance and intervention) shared the progress of the project in the region . ECOWAS was attended by representatives from the Ivory Coast, Guinea Conakry, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad, Libya, Nigeria and Gambia; and the EU had representatives from Germany, Spain, Italy, France and the United Kingdom.
For its part, the Spanish delegation was composed of the Spanish ambassador in Niger, the head of security of the Embassy of Spain, the chief commissioner and head of the UCRIF-Central (Central Unit of Illegal Immigration Networks and Documentary Falsities), the general of the Civil Guard Division, the director of the Justice and Security area of FIIAPP and the coordinator of ECI Niger.
GAR-SI’s mission is to fight against terrorism, while the Niger ECI seeks to contribute to the fight against criminal networks linked to human trafficking.
