Presentation of a rehabilitation manual for prison inmates

The process to reform the Ukraine’s prison system is considered a key factor in the EU-ACT programme to fight drugs and organised crime, funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP, as well as one of the most noteworthy initiatives in the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice action plan.

The “Rehabilitation manual for prison inmates with mental problems due to psychoactive substance abuse” was presented in Kievat an event attended by representatives of the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, the Prison Department, the Spanish Embassy in Kiev, the State Prison Service of Ukraine, FIIAPP, psychologists from the superior prison structure, and their counterparts in the Ukraine.

Members of many international projects, representatives of most religions in the Ukraine and other institutions such as the Prosecutor’s Office, the National Police , the Security Service, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Civil Society Affairs were also in attendance.

It took authors Óscar Herrero and Francisco Requena, psychologists of the superior prison structure, more than a year to complete. They undertook a thorough evaluation of the prisons in collaboration with Ukrainian specialists. The ultimate goal is provide a guide to help implement a rehabilitation programme for drug addicts in Ukrainian prisons.

The next step is to educate specialists and trainers to use it, firstly, in three prisons and preventive detention centres in Ukraine. There will also be a visit to Spanish prisons to observe Spanish methods.
