Peru is to create an intelligence system to fight crime

The project “Support from the European Union in the Fight Against Illicit Drug Trafficking and Organised Crime in Peru” has constituted a Technical Committee within the Peruvian National Police (PNP) Investigation Units. The objective of the Committee is to consolidate the process towards creating an integrated police intelligence system.

Currently, the National Police service in Peru has the technological tools to carry out intelligence functions, however, it does not have established protocol systems or coordinated methodologies to generate the appropriate information that would enable good quality analysis.

Therefore, as part of this European Union financed and FIIAPP managed project, work is being undertaken to improve the use made of the information generated. In addition, an intelligence project expert is working long-term on the project with the PNP Intelligence Units to improve coordination.

The inaugural meeting of the Technical Committee also served as the opportunity to present the diagnosis on intelligence made by European specialists working in the short term, who were facilitated by the project. This diagnosis establishes the way forward to creating an intelligence system according to efficient models that also allows the provision of strategic analysis in the fight against organised crime. This will ensure that the tasks the Peruvian National Police are not currently undertaking are fulfilled.

The meeting was chaired by the Lieutenant General of the National Directorate of Criminal Investigation, Max Reinaldo Iglesias Arévalo, who is the head of the Peruvian National Police service’s Investigation Directorates. Also participating were the generals responsible for these directorates and other police departments who have shown their commitment to carrying out all the necessary actions.
