Improving the joint work done by European cooperation agents is key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda

The Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO) met with the main cooperation agencies in Paris to discuss the future of European cooperation and the implementation of the European Consensus on Development at the annual meeting of the Assembly General of the Practitioners’ Network .
During her opening speech, Deputy Director General of DEVCO, Marjeta Jager, said that “the network is an excellent intermediary to implement the joint commitments of the European Consensus on Development”.
The meeting consisted of two blocks. During the first, there was discussion on joint implementation and inclusiveness, addressing practical solutions to improve the collaborative work of all European Union agents involved in cooperation projects. Expertise France, which has completed its annual presidential mandate, remarked on this, highlighting the importance of encouraging mutual procedural recognition among the agencies of the network.
The second dealt with the importance of finding solutions to global challenges such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the 2030 Agenda, to ensure the mobilisation of all resources. The director of the AECID, which takes on the presidency this year, has indicated that “the diverse nature of participants in the European system of development cooperation is a comparative advantage for Europe in the framework of the 2030 Agenda”.
FIIAPP presented results and recommendations of the work performed in recent months by the Practitioners’ Network. These included mobilising the know-how of public administrations and its impact on joint implementation. The director, Anna Terrón, highlighted the importance of the work done by member states’ cooperation agencies: “we are not external players. The main objective of this network is to achieve mutual understanding and to feel part of the diverse, united European development system“.
A framework agreement – the Financial Framework Partnership Agreement – was signed and will serve as an operational guide for relations between Member States’ agencies and the EU.
