EL PAcCTO organised a workshop in Brazil to tackle the situation of criminal groups in the region’s prisons

Identifying active criminal groups in prisons, knowing their modus operandi in each country and studying methods for limiting their influence on Latin American prison systems was the purpose of the workshop organised by EL PAcCTO in Brazil.
The programme, which is funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP and Expertise France, with the support of the IILA and the Instituto Camões, aims to intensify the fight against organized crime in the region. The meeting also set the bases for standardising prison intelligence procedures and creating a work dynamic between institutions to tackle organised crime in prisons.
Attending the workshop were officials from the prison sector and from law enforcement who specialise in investigation and criminal analysis, and public prosecutors from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay, in addition to a number of European experts.
For EL PAcCTO it is essential to combat these criminal groups, who infiltrate and become stronger in prisons. It is also necessary to share intelligence tools, regulatory instruments and organisational methods and specific ways to manage the members of these groups.
