Exploring different viewpoints on people trafficking was the aim of the training given in Niamey at the headquarters of the Niger JIT, a project to fight criminal networks.
For one week, experts from the Spanish National Police Force covered topics such as the differences between trafficking and smuggling and the indicators for identifying the victims during their journey and at their final destination. Also, during the training, actual cases were used to allow for the practical application of content.
The project, funded by the European Commission and managed by FIIAPP, seeks to train the Níger national police force in investigation and operating procedures. A special emphasis was placed on the various strategies for dealing with potential victims and a description of the normal modus operandi of this kind of network.
The participants, five Nigerien policemen from the joint investigation team, had the opportunity to exchange experiences and compare the European and Nigerien views of investigations of this type. This method made it possible to find the key points for cooperation between the two countries and encourage a common approach.
The training, which was led by Deputy Inspector Miguel Ángel Gabino, an expert in people trafficking and smuggling, ended with a day-long meeting on detecting fake and fraudulent documents, which are closely linked with this problem. This final session was led by one of the French experts on the team.
The aim of the Niger JIT is to contribute to the fight against people trafficking and smuggling, while at the same time fostering the creation of an international protected area against these crimes.
