The sustainable development programme is under way in Paraguay, promoting and accelerating implementation of the 2030 Agenda
The Support for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in Paraguay programme, an initiative funded by the European Union and managed in delegated cooperation by FIIAPP, will run until November 2023.
The programme responds to the need to promote and accelerate implementation of the 2030 Agenda through attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a roadmap for sustainable development in Paraguay. While the programme encompasses the 17 SDGs that make up the 2030 Agenda, it focuses primarily on Goals 5 (gender equality), 13 (climate action), 15 (life on land, and 17 (partnerships for the goals).
It has three specific aims, the first of which is to provide the country with an efficient governance system for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda through the use of official statistical data as an instrument for monitoring and evaluating the targets and indicators of the SDGs. The second focuses on achieving better public policies for the application of the 2030 Agenda. The third is to promote citizens’ participation in its implementation.
The main Paraguayan national organisations involved are the Paraguay SDG Commission, the National Statistics Institute, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Women. A work plan has been established with each, with the Paraguay SDG Commission as the cross-cutting reference body that will strengthen the programme’s comprehensive approach. Sub-national governments, the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, the Congress of the Republic, the Judiciary and civil society will also participate.
The actions of the programme are aimed at strengthening SDG coordination mechanisms, the design and implementation of public policies aligned with the SDGs and the monitoring of actions enabling accountability on the achievement of targets and indicators. All the foregoing seeks to promote institutional strengthening with full exercise of the leading role of the country’s public authorities, social dialogue, awareness-raising and the participation of different actors in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.
