Today, in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, was the inauguration of a new cooperation project funded by the European Union to fight chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks. The project is being managed and led by FIIAPP.
The European cooperation project CBRN 46 was launched today in the Philippine capital of Manila with the firm objective of mitigating the nuclear, radiological, biological and chemical (CBRN) risks that threaten these eight countries in Southeast Asia: Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam.
With a duration of three years, financed with three million euros by the European Commission and managed by FIIAPP, the project will focus on aspects such as response capacity, security and awareness of the population in these countries. It will also focus on the study of their legal frameworks in the face of these risks that may be deliberate, such as the use of chemical materials in a terrorist attack or in a criminal act, or accidents caused by natural factors or human error.
The launch was attended by CBRN threat experts from the beneficiary countries and also from European organisations. “This project offers a fantastic opportunity for our European experts to work with colleagues in South-East Asia to improve the region’s capabilities in responding to CBRN incidents, in managing biological threats and in raising awareness of issues related to CBRN materials. It is sure to be a very successful three years,” said project team leader Nigel Tottie.
Cooperation workshops
This project aims to train technicians and assist beneficiary countries in assessing and reviewing their laboratory capabilities, safety protocols and waste management, particularly those related to biological materials. The awareness-raising part will be complemented by workshops and conferences in the region and by reviewing the CBRN legislative provisions of the countries involved in the project.
