A crime victims’ support office was opened in Istanbul under the framework of the twinning project “Strengthening victims’ rights in the criminal justice system”, funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP. The project also encompasses the monitoring of the pilot offices in Eskisehir, Adana, Malatya, Samsun, Rize and Istanbul where interviews will be carried out to detect their needs and make recommendations to improve them.
The Deputy Minister of Justice of the Republic of Turkey, Selahaddin Menteş, the Director of Public Prosecution of Istanbul, İsmail Uçar and the Head of the European Union Delegation, Christian Berger, among others, were present at the opening ceremony of the Istanbul office.
Moreover, with a view to opening new pilot offices in the rest of the regions of the Republic of Turkey, several exchanges of experiences and study visits were made to Spain, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Finland and the United Kingdom, in the course of which the Turkish specialists were able to analyse the different models that exist in the European Union. Furthermore, in the countries visited, information was provided on the support and assistance provided to the victims of crime, particularly in relation to gender-based violence and child abuse.
Developed by Spanish specialists from the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) together with their Turkish counterparts, this project seeks to strengthen the Turkish system’s support for crime victims and contribute to improving its institutions. The underlying project aim is to support and respect the dignity of victims and aid them in the exercise of their rights, thus avoiding a second victimisation and thereby reducing the feeling of insecurity and frustration they experience after the crime.
