EUROCLIMA + has held a meeting to address the importance of monitoring and evaluating the climate policies of each country
The EUROCLIMA + programme, financed by the EU and jointly managed by FIIAPP, has held its 17th virtual exchange meeting of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Climate Policies Community of Practice (M&E COP), implemented through FIIAPP and the LEDS LAC Regional Platform.
The initiative came about in 2018 to address the need for countries in the region to be able to rely on robust, well-built, practical systems for monitoring and evaluating climate policies and their action plans. These systems are key both to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the adaptation and mitigation processes by incorporating new information and lessons learned, and for verifying and transparently reporting fulfilment of the commitments made in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement and other multilateral agreements.
The session focused on learning about the perspectives and implementation of the monitoring and evaluation of sectoral climate policies, as well as providing an opportunity to delve into the challenges posed by measures to combat climate change.
The meeting was attended by specialists from the region, who emphasised the global nature of the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), specifically AR6, its sixth assessment report and the comparative utility of these reports for the region.
For their part, representatives of the Uruguayan Ministry of Public Health spoke of their country’s progress in terms of climate change, specifically in the area of health and reporting, outlining the measures implemented in the country since 2004.
The meeting was attended by 32 members of the M&E COP with a range of functions in environmental, sectoral and planning ministries of various countries in the region. To conclude, the participants stressed the importance of knowing the particular nature of each territory, the need to further promote the participation of all health sector players in tackling the problems and the individual needs of climate change management.
