The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, through the Masar Programme of the Spanish Agency for international Development Cooperation (AECID) and the FIIAPP, collaborates on the organisation of a meeting of the Syrian opposition which will take place in Madrid on 20 and 21 May.
The aim of this meeting is to facilitate dialogue among the different factions of the Syrian opposition, thus favouring a process which could lead to a greater level of understanding and cohesion among them, to the benefit of future unity, stability and democracy in Syria. This meeting is carried out with the support of the Masar Programme of Spanish Cooperation, coordinated by the AECID.
Masar Programme
The MASAR Programme (“path” in Arabic) is a Spanish Cooperation programme whose aim is to accompany the processes of democratic government in the Arab world. MASAR will support democratic processes in the region, contributing to the modernisation and the strengthening of the institutions and the key agents in the development of the Rule of Law, so that public powers can respond to the needs of their societies.
Spanish Cooperation has experience in the sphere of governance in the Arab world thanks to its work on the ground in recent years, supporting the processes of modernisation and empowerment of public institutions, the strengthening of social organisations and support to the mechanisms for interaction between the former and the latter. The programme focuses its efforts on public institutions and agents of civil society. The instruments of the programme are the transfer of technical resources, the training of human resources, technical assistance and consultancy of the cycle of public policies, the exchange of good practices and the strengthening of networks, investigation and political advocacy and seminars, conferences and other awareness-raising activities. On the other hand, it promotes the exchange of experiences among Arab countries which are at different stages of the process of democratic construction.
