The environmental cooperation project in Macedonia, financed by EU and managed by FIIAPP, has once again brought Macedonia experts to Spain to learn about the country's experience in environmental inspection.
A high-level delegation from FYR Macedonia, made up of representatives from the Central Environmental Inspectorate and municipalities of that country, has carried out an intense programme of visits to both organisations responsible for environmental inspection and to various industrial facilities in Extremadura (Spain) and Portugal. The visit, framed within the cooperation project on the application and compliance of the EU environmental acquis in Macedonia, financed by the European Commission and managed by FIIAPP, has attempted to present examples of good practices in the field of environmental inspection and compliance with environmental regulations by companies.
Among other institutions, during the last week of September and the first week of October, the delegation learned about the work of the Environmental Protection Service of the General Directorate of the Environment of the Regional Government of Extremadura, where they were received by the Head of the Environmental Protection Service, Esperanza Martínez. In Portugal, the visit to the General Inspectorate for the Agriculture, Sea, Environment and Spatial Planning (IGAMAOT) stands out. There they were welcomed by the Inspector General of the Portuguese Inspectorate, Nuno Miguel S. Banza.
The members of the delegation were able to visit an oil refinery, a solar thermal energy production plant, a laying hen and feed production farm, a glass recycling plant, a recycling plant for waste electrical and electronic equipment and a pig farm.
A Twinning on the environment
This European cooperation project, also known as Twinning, aims to improve the effectiveness of the Macedonian environmental inspection system to ensure compliance with the European standards introduced in recent years in Macedonian legislation.
Funded by the European Commission with one million euros, Spain is the leading partner with the management of the FIIAPP and the work of the Ministry of Environment, Territory and Infrastructure of Galicia. Holland also participates in this Twinning through the collaboration of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment. More information about the project here.
