The following people attended the conference entitled “The fight against piracy and armed assaults in the Gulf of Guinea”: Miguel de Domingo, Director of the FIIAPP’s Security and Justice Department; Adriaan VAN DER MEER, Head of the Instrument for Stability for the EC’s Nuclear Safety Unit; Ambassadors Robert D. ZANTAN and Eric Franck SAIZONOU from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Benin; and other important representatives of the beneficiary countries, international organisations involved in the programme and members of the consortium in charge of the project.
During this conference, acts of maritime piracy and armed assaults at sea were denounced as limiting the capacity of national services that areresponsible for complying with legislation so as to ensure the rule of law. Nevertheless, better cooperation among security services on a national and regional level could greatly increase the capacity to guarantee safety.
A debate took place in which participants discussed what CRIMGO can do to strengthen cooperation considering the recent approval of measures at the Summit of the Heads of State of the Gulf of Guinea.
Financed by the EU, the FIIAPP is participating in this programme in collaboration with the Spanish Navy as part of the consortium led by FEI (France Expertise Internationale).
