With the aim of more effective counter-terrorism, Iraqi police strengthen their forensic science skills
For a month and a half, Iraqi law enforcement personnel will be working with their Spanish and Italian counterparts in different training sessions to strengthen their skills in the field of forensic science policing.
This initiative, promoted by the European project CT-Just, has had both a technical and practical focus. Strengthening capacities and skills in the scientific field is crucial both for the fight against terrorism and to promote compliance with international and human rights standards.
During the sessions, the importance of proper crime scene management and the admissibility of evidence in international judicial proceedings is being highlighted. In addition, special emphasis is being placed on advanced forensic investigation and analysis techniques, particularly at complex scenes of terrorist acts. Furthermore, international cooperation has been promoted through the exchange of forensic data, in line with INTERPOL standards.
The aim of these training sessions is to improve the investigative and police-scientific skills of the participants, to raise awareness of the need for continuous training and the promotion of international cooperation for a more effective fight against terrorism. Participants have also been introduced to fingerprint identification techniques and the proper preservation of the crime scene from the earliest stages, allowing for a more effective and efficient investigation.
As part of the effort to enrich both international cooperation and the knowledge being acquired, a visit by the Iraqi specialists to the forensic laboratory of the Spanish National Police is planned, in order to learn first-hand about the techniques and resources of the Spanish police in the field of forensic science.
