The European CT Just project has begun work with Iraq to strengthen the counter-terrorism capabilities of the Iraqi judiciary
Terrorism has become very important in Iraq in recent years. This is not only because they commit attacks, but also because they recruit, radicalise, recruit and train for attacks.
The role of women in terrorist acts has changed, and through the European cooperation project CT Just, a police training plan is being developed in Iraq that focuses, among other things, on increasing the participation of women in police training.
In addition, at the same time, work is underway to strengthen the Iraqi judiciary’s counter-terrorism capabilities through specialised training and collaboration between the institutions involved.
CT Just has submitted a comprehensive training proposal to the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council, focusing on critical areas such as international judicial cooperation, digital evidence management, anti-money laundering and victim and witness protection. Meetings with Iraqi judicial leaders and their European counterparts have highlighted the pressing need for specialised training and highlighted important challenges such as extradition issues and the integrity of evidence.
The mission has also emphasised gender mainstreaming, advocating for at least 25% female participation in training activities. In addition, CT JUST’s collaboration with the European Advisory Mission to Iraq aims to improve the visibility, coordination and effectiveness of judicial training programmes, fulfilling the objective of a unified EU approach to its interventions.
This initiative reflects CT JUST’s commitment to promote long-term judicial excellence and regional stability, contributing to a more secure and peaceful Iraq. Working closely with the EU Advisory Mission and the European Delegation in Baghdad, CT JUST continues to pave the way for strong international cooperation in the fight against terrorism, setting a new standard for future engagement and collaborative initiatives.
