EUROCLIMA+ has joined forces with Honduras to encourage reforestation by providing small farmers with financing
Honduras intends to restore one million hectares of forest by 2030. The initiative will implement forest and agro-forest systems to increase their surface area in the country. To achieve this, small agricultural producers will be offered access to financing mechanisms, training, and low interest loans to improve their economic conditions. Increasing forest mass is important to mitigate the effects of climate change through the carbon captured by new plantations.
The European EUROCLIMA+ programme is supporting this initiative to help Honduras achieve its goal. Implementation of climate financing inclusion in Honduras is beingpromoted by the Presidential Office for Climate Change.
A virtual meeting was held to analyse the role that the Secretary of Natural Resources and Environment could play in the Climate Financing Inclusion Initiative that Honduras is planning in order to achieve the forest restoration goal. The Honduran Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment and Honduran Presidential Office for Climate Change, attended the meeting with the the EU Delegation along with representatives from the EUROCLIMA+ programme.
Minister Elvis Rodas participated in the meeting as the senior representative of the Secretariat, a key institution for the fulfilment of Honduras’ climate goals, and he expressed his commitment to this process, highlighting the importance of aligning the productive sectors around the achievement of climate objectives. Likewise, Minister Rodas highlighted the need to have robust platforms to monitor the actions and allow for effective accounting of the actions undertaken.
