EUROsociAL + and the Colombian government in favour of tax education in schools and universities
The National Tax and Customs Directorate (DIAN), in alliance with the Democratic Governance policies area of EUROsociAL +, a programme funded by the European Union and managed by the FIIAPP, organized a Taxpaying Culture Week in Caquetá, Colombia in order to promote tax awareness in Colombian schools and universities.
The programming of this cultural event included best practices relating to the taxpaying culture, which brought academia together with the public authorities and was attended by around one thousand students.
The European cooperation programme, EUROsociAL +, promotes the construction of an active, supportive and participatory citizenship and in this context it promotes tax education as a tool to raise awareness of the importance of paying taxes, as well as citizens’ right to have these funds used effectively and efficiently.
Taxpaying Culture Week aims to contribute to the necessary cultural change that must be brought about first of all in tax administrations. For this transformation to achieve the desired impact and sustainability, strategic alliances with the educational system with an appropriate didactic approach are required.
EUROsociAL + boosts this objective by accompanying the educational institutions of Colombia and the DIAN, mainly by promoting the initiative of the Accounting and Tax Support Centres (NAF), which are free university tax advice offices aimed at micro-entrepreneurs and low-income persons, already up and running in 79 universities; as well as encouraging the DIAN’s already successful rapprochement with the educational institutions, which have agreed to have their teachers promote this theme in schools and universities around the country.
