The EU-Cuba Experience Exchange Project has participated in the organisation of the II International Renewable Energy Fair in Havana
Since 2014, the Government of Cuba has been implementing the ‘Policy for the development of renewable energy sources (FRE) and the efficient use of energy until 2030’. The goal for 2030 is to reach 24% of electricity generation by 2030 through clean sources.
As part of this process, the II edition of the International Fair of Renewable Energies in Cuba was held in Havana. The event, sponsored by the European Union and organized by the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), was aimed at promoting the use of renewable energies and attracting foreign investment, with emphasis on solar energy and biomass.
The Fair brought together 24 exhibitors, including entrepreneurs and experts from 29 countries. International organizations were also present, including the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the International Solar Alliance (ISA), the French Development Agency (AFD), the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Within the framework of the Fair, the EU-Cuba Experience Exchange Project for the promotion of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in Cuba, managed by the FIIAPP and financed by the European Union, organized the Sustainable Energy Forum on June 23 and 24, 2022 with the objective of creating a space for the exchange of experiences, advances and new technologies in the industries and entities associated with the energy sector in Cuba. The event was attended by Cuban managers, entrepreneurs and specialists linked to the country’s energy sector, including representatives of MINEM, the National Office for the Control of the Rational Use of Energy (ONURE), the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment of Cuba (MINCEX), and the Chamber of Commerce of Cuba.
The Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, Cuba’s Deputy Prime Minister, opened the Forum by emphasizing that guaranteeing sufficient access to clean energy is one of the Cuban government’s main priorities. Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa, ambassador of the European Union in Cuba, used her opening remarks to highlight the European commitment to renewable energies and energy efficiency, and to the program of support for Cuba’s energy policy. Through the screen, he stressed that the Fair is an opportunity to learn about the potential of Cuba’s energy sector. For his part, the Minister of MINEM, Liván Nicolás Arronte Cruz, spoke about the goals that drive the implementation of the Policy approved in 2014, specifically the diversification of the energy matrix to reach 24% of electricity generation from clean energy in 2030.
