The FIIAPP and the CEDDET Foundation organized an international workshop on protection of personal data in El Salvador in October.
The FIIAPP and CEDDET, with the event in San Salvador, are supporting the Institute of Access to Public Information (IAIP) of El Salvador to improve its policy on protection of personal data. The activity, part of the transparency and anti-corruption action of the EUROsociAL programme, financed by the European Commission, also included the participation of the Spanish Data Protection Agency.
The objective of the workshop was to orient the guidelines and procedures of the Salvadoran Public Administration based on Latin American and European experiences.
The first day of the workshop was devoted to the presentation of international experiences of best practises. In addition to the aforementioned Spanish agency, with expertise in data protection, the event included the participation of representatives of the Costa Rican Data Protection Agency and the Mexican Federal Institute of Access to Public Information (IAIP), as well as that of the President-Commissioner of the Honduran Institute of Access to Public Information and the Director of the Peruvian Data Protection Authority. The day ended with work in groups that made it possible to systematize international best practises relevant to the Salvadoran case.
The second day of the workshop was focused on exploring the views on data protection of different sectors of the Salvadoran public administration, as well as of civil society. Some of these inputs came from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, the Supreme Court of Justice and the FUSADESFoundation, representing the private sector. On the second day, working groups were also held in order to systematize the different institutional views on data protection at the national level.
Carlos Ortega, President of the IAIP, stated that “all the contributions and inputs obtained in this workshop will make it possible to agree on and provide the first guidelines and procedures for personal data protection that the IAIP will promote in this area, in compliance with the Law on Access to Public Information in El Salvador”.
