The Programme is committed to training to make progress in the shared challenge of measuring adaptation to climate change in Latin American countries

Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) hosted a workshop on monitoring and evaluating the adaptation to climate change. The seminar was organized by the EUROCLIMA+ programme the Partnership on Transparency in the Paris Agreement (PATPA) and the Government of Colombia.
The event included the participation of representatives of leading institutions on climate change from 15 Latin American countries who are in charge of monitoring and evaluation (M&E), planning and evaluation, statistics and finance. Likewise, there were specialists from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Spanish Climate Change Office (MITECO).
The conference aims to address a request from governments to design and implement strategies for adapting to climate change arising from climate change and the increasing vulnerability of society and the natural environment.
Training was provided during the workshop on M&E systems that are mechanisms for education and management enabling adaptation strategies to be evaluated and the adjustments necessary to be identified, as well as to promote an improvement in political decisions and planning.
In the sessions, the Director of Climate Change and Risk Management in Colombia José Francisco Charry stressed that “for the first time we are beginning to see a holistic vision incorporating mitigation and adaptation. Colombia is in the process of updating its NDC, and everything we learn here will be a contribution in that regard.”
For her part, the representative of the European Union delegation in the country, Maria Järviö, highlighted the importance of regional cooperation between Europe and Latin America, such as the EUROCLIMA+ programme, in facing challenges such as adaptation.
Similarly, the Deputy Director of the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies of Colombia, Diana Vargas, emphasized the need to take action after the workshop, highlighting that “our responsibility is to return home and launch the adaptation measures we need.”
About the project
EUROCLIMA+ is a regional climate change programme for Latin America funded by the European Union and implemented by FIIAPP and four other member state agencies, along with two United Nations agencies.
Its goal is the promotion of environmental sustainability and development resilient to climate change in eighteen Latin American countries, with particular attention to the most vulnerable groups and the fulfilment of the commitments made in the Paris Agreement.
