MediPIET, a project led by the FIIAPP and the National Epidemiology Centre of the Carlos III Institute(CNE-ISCIII) that aims to strengthen health security in 18 countries in the Mediterranean region by training local epidemiologists, is kicking off.

The objective of the training is to enable these specialists to detect, investigate and respond to biological threats to the health of the population, whether natural (such as communicable diseases) or caused by humans, according to the standards of the European Union, per their request.
The beneficiaries of this project are Albania, Armenia, Algeria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Egypt, Georgia, Jordan, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Macedonia, Morocco, Moldavia, Montenegro, Palestine, Serbia, Tunisia and Ukraine.
MediPIET, which has a duration of three years and is being led by the FIIAPP for management and the CNE-ISCIII for training, represents an implementation and consolidation phase of a first preparation phase for these specialists carried out between 2012 and 2014 and managed by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
The specialists will receive training in the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET) and the Spanish Field Epidemiology Programme (PEAC), developed by the CNE-ISCIII.
From today until Thursday, 26th June, a workshop for specialists from these 18 countries is being held at the ISCIII headquarters to launch the project and transfer procedures between the first and second phases of the project.
MediPIET has a budget of 6,400,000 euros from the Directorate-General of the European Union responsible for Development and Cooperation policies (EuropeaAid-DEVCO).
