Cuban municipalities self-sufficient in energy

Within the framework of the Cuba – European Union II Expertise Exchange cooperation project, which has European funding, two Spanish specialists have made a technical visit to Cuba together with the FIIAPP team supervising the project in the country. During the visit, which lasted more than a week, the specialists visited various facilities implementing new technologies for energy efficiency and there has been a technical exchange with companies and local authorities to learn about the territory’s energy planning and current state of affairs.

Several hotel facilities were visited during the week that are already using systems such as desalination to obtain water. Several waste water plants and two biogas production plants were also visited, one of which is currently under construction and aims to make the municipality of Martí energy self-sufficient.

As a result of the visit, the specialist company that is leading the technical assistance will prepare a proposal identifying the most appropriate ways to recover waste in the hotel facilities that were visited or others that are potentially interested. Likewise, it will support the design of the projects being launched for power generation and cold generation using biogas obtained from waste generated in the study area.

This technical assistance is part of Subject Area III of the “Production Chains, Energy Efficiency and Business Development” project led by the Cuban Ministry of Economy and Planning and the National Institute of Economic Research and it specifically contributes to the “Identification of experiences that promote energy efficiency in economic activities and the use of renewable energy sources”.
