Argentina recently hosted the 4th COPOLAD Annual Week on Precursors, organised by COPOLAD, a programme funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP, which brought countries from Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union together. This last edition closes the cycle that began in Barcelona in 2016, with editions subsequently held in Brasilia in 2017 and Lisbon in 2018.
In this occasion, the current situation regarding chemical precursors for the illicit manufacture of drugs was discussed along with presentations of cases from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU). New psychoactive substances and their challenges were also addressed, forensic techniques and the role of laboratories were explored, processes relating to seizures and visual inspections were examined in depth, and emphasis was placed on the importance of collaboration with the industry and inter-agency cooperation.Besides that, , visits were made to the forensic and criminology laboratory of the Federal Police of Argentina.
The event hosted a total of 80 specialists from 40 countries, therefore a significant representation from the most important international organizations addressing these issues was present, among them, the Ibero-American Association of Public Prosecutors (AIAMP), the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD-OAS), the European Commission’s Directorate General for Taxation and Customs (DG TAXUD) and the Programme for Strengthening Criminal Investigation and Criminal Justice Cooperation along the Cocaine Route in Latin America, the Caribbean and West Africa (CRIMJUST), also funded by the European Commission.
This event, held in Buenos Aires, took place within the framework of the COPOLAD programme and under the leadership of the Ministry of Security of Argentina and the Secretariat for Comprehensive Policies on Drugs of the Argentine Nation (SEDRONAR), together with the Intelligence Centre against Terrorism and Organized Crime (CITCO) of Spain’s Ministry of the Interior.
