COPOLAD III visits drug administration in Argentina and Uruguay

Representatives of COPOLAD III have met in Buenos Aires and Montevideo with the public administrations of health, social services, women, interior and justice that deal with the drug problem to analyse the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic on drug policies and to learn about the interests of both countries in the programme.  

The director of the cooperation programme, Javier Sagredo, and the FIIAPP technician Ana Cirujano, visited the EU Delegation in Argentina and the Secretariat for Integrated Drug Policies (SEDRONAR) to meet the needs of the institutions in the field of drugs. There they were also able to see their support systems for people and communities affected by drug use. 

On the other hand, Argentinean institutions have conveyed to IILA officials their interest in improving policies on money laundering and management of assets seized from the illegal drug market.  

Subsequently, the programme delegation held a meeting in Uruguay with the Secretary General of the National Drug Board, Daniel Radío, to learn about national priorities in aspects of consumption and control of the illegal drug market. There, they also visited care facilities for people with drug dependency.  

Over the next few years, COPOLAD III will carry out more than half a thousand activities with public administrations in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop effective public policy responses to drug use.   

The programme  

COPOLAD is a European cooperation programme that focuses both on the aspects of attention to problematic drug use, public safety and the financial impact of organised crime, as well as support for the generation of more and better knowledge of the different dimensions of the drug phenomenon. Likewise, it is dedicated to the expansion of technical and political dialogue in the framework of the 2030 Agenda and human rights. The promotion of gender equality and equity will be a central focus of the interventions.
