Senior officials of the European Union (EU), EUROPOL, INTERPOL, AMERIPOL and the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre (MAOCN), along with anti-drug experts and directors from various countries debated their experiences in the workshop entitled ‘Improvement of police and judicial cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking between Latin America, Europe and West Africa. Perspectives from the AMERIPOL-EU project and for the future’ held on the 1st and 2nd of April at the headquarters of the Canillas National Police Force.
This conference was opened by the Secretary of State for Security of the Ministry of the Interior, Francisco Martínez, and closed by the Director General of the National Police Force, Ignacio Cosidó.
The workshop, organized by FIIAPP and the CNP and financed by the European Commission, had the following objectives: present the main results of the AMERIPOL-EU project to date, including the Pilot System for Information Exchange; promote better coordination, as well as the exchange of information and intelligence between stakeholders at the regional, national and international level; and facilitate joint work in the medium term to open up new communication channels.
The issues addressed in this workshop included international police cooperation in relation to drug trafficking, information exchange in joint operations and police and judicial cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.
AMERIPOL-EU is a programme started by the UE in 2010 with the aim of preparing the police, judicial and tax authorities of the partner countries to collaborate in the fight against organized criminal networks. Its geographic scope covers Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, Venezuela, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.
The International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP)is responsible for implementing this programme in collaboration with the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK, ADETEF of France, the Judicial Police of Portugal and the Finance Guard of Italy.
