The EU initiative has led to the signing of a Letter of Intent by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, FIIAPP and Expertise France
In a significant step towards the protection of the Amazon, the three institutions involved in the project have formalised a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation (ACTO), in the framework of the Amazon+ Programme, a project financed by the European Union.
The main mission of the Amazon+ programme is to support the Amazonian countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela) in their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, adapt to climate change and strengthen the protection of biodiversity.
The Letter of Intent emphasises the importance of working together to address crucial challenges, such as the prevention of deforestation, degradation and forest fires in the Amazon Rainforest. In addition, it seeks to strengthen the countries’ capacities in the prevention, monitoring and control of these problems, with the active participation and recognition of indigenous peoples and local-traditional communities in order to increase their capacities and influence on public policies.
The CoI lays the foundations for future agreements to strengthen cooperation in favour of sustainable development in the Amazon. This partnership is aligned with the Belém Presidential Declaration of August 2023, where the States reaffirmed their commitment to the sustainable development and conservation of the region, prioritising strategic issues and on which the programme is expected to contribute significantly.
The parties are committed to coordinate efforts to ensure maximum visibility of this collaboration, recognising the contribution of each entity, as well as the financial support of the European Union.
