Activities for crisis management in Algeria

Three experts from the civil protection services of Spain, Emilio Leo, Pedro León and Estrella Romero, have led two activities within the framework of the project to strengthen Algerian civil protection capacities. These activities are aimed at improving risk prevention and promoting a culture of management of potential humanitarian and environmental crises in Algeria. They also seek to collect information on the current situation in Algeria in this area, with a view to comparing it to current EU legislation on the subject.

In the first activity, experts Emilio Leo and Pedro León led a training session for officials of the Emergency Response Coordination Centre in which they were able to exchange experiences and compile the lessons learnt during the project with the civil protection teams of Algeria. Lastly, the training participants took a drill in which they applied what they learned through a simulation of a real situation.

The second activity included the collaboration of expert Estrella Romero. In it, the data collected during a study comparing the Algerian traffic accident management system to those of two European countries was analysed. Following the analysis, the conclusions were shared. This activity also had a space dedicated to promoting the creation of a response protocol for traffic accidents. The activity concluded with a seminar in which members of different security forces (Police, Gendarmerie, Civil Protection, the Algerian Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Public Works) shared their impressions of the problem. The aim of this activity was to contribute to reducing mortality from traffic accidents in Algeria.
