The Prevention of Electoral Violence and Provision of Security in Ghana's Northern Border Regions (NORPREVSEC) project concludes successfully, leaving a lasting legacy in Ghana.
The NORPREVSEC: Preventing Electoral Violence and Enhancing Security in Ghana project, funded by the European Union and implemented by FIIAPP, COGINTA and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has officially come to an end after 4 years of successful implementation.
The project, aimed at preventing violent extremism and promoting community cohesion, has achieved significant milestones in Ghana. Through innovative approaches and collaborative efforts, NORPREVSEC has contributed to improved coordination among security agencies through more than thirty trainings with 1,400 personnel from all security agencies in the five northern regions of Ghana.
Ghana has now developed a West African Police Information System (WAPIS) database and a coordination office has been established in Tamale. In addition, the project has also facilitated the use of Ghana’s National Security Strategy and the development of police operations. And, in general, the coordinated work of local institutions with European institutions has provided support to vulnerable groups in peacebuilding.
Irchad RAZAALY, EU Ambassador to Ghana, said, “This closing ceremony will not only mark the successful conclusion of this important project, but will also highlight the ongoing collaborative efforts between the EU and Ghana to ensure regional stability and security.”
“The NORPREVSEC project has been an extraordinary journey and we are proud of the impact it has had on Ghana; we are grateful for the EU funding and the dedication of our partners and stakeholders,” said Kan Dapaah, Minister of National Security.
“COGINTA Ghana, through the NORPREVSEC program, has strengthened the capacities of the Regional House of Chiefs and Regional Peace Councils through logistical support and training on Alternative Dispute Resolution, the Chieftancy and Succession Act and the New Land Law. “604 chiefs and queen mothers and council members have benefited from these trainings,” stated Rev. Father Aapengnuo, COGINTA team leader.
