The European Euroclima programme has mobilised staff from the Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid (EMT) to Santo Domingo to advance in the electrification of some bus lines
The Municipal Transport Company (EMT) of Madrid is a benchmark in the electrification of public transport, and for this reason a delegation of specialists has visited Santo Domingo to work with their counterparts on the island and make progress on the proposal for the electrification of various bus lines in the Dominican capital.
The European Union has agreed with the government of the Dominican Republic to promote sustainable mobility through the Euroclima programme. And it was precisely through the programme that the Madrid delegation of the EMT was mobilised to present its analysis of the bus network of the Operadora Metropolitana de Servicio de Autobuses (OMSA) to the Dominican authorities.
EMT staff held meetings with representatives of OMSA, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (INTRANT) and the National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL) and, together with them, visited different locations in Santo Domingo.
These visits and meetings have helped the EMT delegation to verify its analysis on the ground and to be able to discuss with the Dominican authorities the different electrification alternatives according to the current conditions of the network and the demographic, economic and social needs that the urban transport system of Santo Domingo must meet.
In parallel, the company EVECTRA, also with European funding from the Euroclima programme, is carrying out complementary work to determine the regulatory standards and the characteristics of the network of charging stations for these electric buses in order to ensure that they comply with European standards.
“The transport sector is one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. A transition to a greener economy that mitigates the acceleration of climate change involves promoting more sustainable public transport systems that do not use fossil fuels,” said Elsa Velasco, one of the coordinators of the Euroclima Programme at FIIAPP in Spain.
