The CADAP 7 cooperation programme has organised a workshop in Astana (Kazakhstan) to improve drug control, detect new psychoactive substances and develop early warning systems
Experts from Kazakhstan and the European Union have met to exchange knowledge on monitoring drugs, psychoactive substances and early warning systems in order to develop and maintain an early warning system for detection, information exchange, assessment and response to the emergence of new substances.
The meeting, organised by the Central Asia Drug Demand Reduction Programme, CADAP 7, led by FIIAPP, was attended by the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Education and the public foundation “Drug Control Centre”.
Experts from Kazakhstan shared the drug situation in the country, the current system of prevention and treatment, the coordination of drug policy, new psychoactive substances and how these new trends are being controlled. For their part, specialists mobilised by CADAP from the Czech centre “Spolecnost Podane Ruce” presented the example of the Czech Republic in which they have integrated the gender perspective in the national policy. In addition, the participants learned about the European experience in early warning systems for new psychoactive substances.
The workshop has promoted national dialogue on drug monitoring and the development of early warning systems based on European best practices and international standards. It has also fostered dialogue between governmental and non-governmental agencies to define a unified action plan to improve data collection and early warning systems in Kazakhstan.
