SecTrans-NAS organises the latest workshops and trainings for the transport of dangerous chemical and biological goods in Tunisia
The European SecTrans-Nas project for the safe transport of dangerous goods in North Africa and the Sahel (NAS), in whose management the FIIAPP participates, has held its last regional workshops in Tunisia. The project, which began three years ago in Tunisia, will conclude in June.
The online activities in Tunisia have focused on recommendations on the steps and procedures to follow in order to adapt Tunisian national legislation to international standards. Likewise, plans for the circulation of hazardous materials both nationally and in the capital, practical guidelines for security and operational protection protocols and emergency response plans have been promoted.
Tunisia is a member of the Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR). This consensus, which aims to regulate the transport of dangerous goods by road, has been ratified by 52 countries that are committed to good safety and security practices in order to comply with international regulations. Along these lines, the workshops also aimed to train those involved in the country’s transport chain in ADR.
In addition, the activities addressed the transport of biological samples and included specific training on how to respond to accidents involving hazardous biological and chemical materials.
All the training was followed with great interest and was well attended by the Tunisian representatives.
In 2010, the European Union launched the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Risk Mitigation Centres of Excellence. The aim of this initiative is to prevent, prepare for and manage CBRN incidents. These can be of criminal (trafficking, theft, proliferation, sabotage), accidental (industrial disasters, waste treatment) or natural origin.
Through the SecTrans-NAS project, support is provided for the reinforcement of these regulations in North Africa and the Sahel. One of the main lines of work focuses on the adaptation of the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR). SecTrans-NAS works on the regulation of this type of goods and their transport, as well as on the prevention of accidents to safeguard the population and the environment.
The added value of this European Union Initiative is to promote a holistic view of the risks and threats of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Risks that are sufficiently addressed separately despite numerous commonalities and to make available to participants an international resource of authorities and experts who meet regularly.
