Twinning for advanced forensic methods training project organises specialised training on ISO 17020 standards applied to police investigation
The Twinning project for training in advanced forensic methods has organised an activity in Istanbul to contribute to the improvement of crime scene investigation procedures following the evaluation of accredited methods.
Experts from the criminalistics service (SECRIM) of the Guardia Civil have trained 15 professionals from the forensic department of the Turkish Gendarmerie in relation to the ISO 17020 standard, which refers to the requirements for the operation of bodies that carry out police inspections. In this way, by improving the impartiality and consistency of investigations, the aim is to promote public confidence in key bodies such as the Turkish Gendarmerie that carry out forensic inspection work.
The workshops emphasised the importance of the use of records that verify the traceability of any person who has participated in the visual inspection process, the actions carried out and the equipment used for this purpose in inspection operations. Similarly, the use of standardised formats to record the training of personnel, as well as their supervision, both in situ and in simulations, has been highlighted. This is the way to acquire and maintain the competence of personnel to comply with the general and specific requirements of ISO 17020.
