Costa Rica presents its plan to meet the climate goals

The European Union and Costa Rica share the commitment to develop strategies and actions that allow progress in sustainable, inclusive and resilient development. And this commitment is made clear through the alliance they have established through the EUROCLIMA+ programme.

The actions that the EUROCLIMA+ programme will undertake to accompany Costa Rica have been built jointly between the national authorities responsible for the sectoral portfolios and the implementing agencies of the programme: FIIAPP, AECID, Expertise France and GIZ.

A roadmap was presented at the event that includes five actions focused on decarbonisation and carbon neutrality. The implementation of the National Strategy for Climate Empowerment will be carried out, with the FIIAPP assisting by advising on the action plan for its implementation. In addition, work will be done to strengthen capacities for the implementation of the National Adaptation Policy in Costa Rica, in this case the actions will be accompanied by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and Expertise France (EF). Through the dissemination of key studies and the provision of tools and capacity building, GIZ will accompany Costa Rica in increasing the involvement, participation and ambition of the private sector in climate action. The fourth action also with the assistance of the FIIAPP will consist of strengthening the institutional capacity for technical support in organic agricultural production. And finally, the fifth action will consist of evaluating the National Policy for Adaptation to Climate Change (PNACC), which will allow the country to identify the factors that have contributed to and/or limited the effective implementation of the NPA.

The event was opened by Alberto Menghini, Head of Regional Cooperation for the European Union (EU) in Costa Rica, who pointed out the relevance of EUROCLIMA+ as the EU’s flagship programme on climate change in Latin America. “I am sure that the execution of this Action Plan will be very fruitful and the alliance between the European Union and Costa Rica will continue to strengthen”, said the EU spokesman.

For her part, the Minister for Environment and Energy of Costa Rica, Andrea Meza, highlighted in her speech the importance of the coming decade for the promotion of actions and systemic changes that demand the joint work of different actors. “This Action Plan will encourage us to accelerate that action and empower its various actors”, concluded Meza.

This same week, the presentation of the EUROCLIMA+ Country Action Plan in Panama will also be held, which will take place in a face-to-face event in Panama City and will include the participation of the Panamanian Minister for the Environment, Milcíades Concepción, and Felice Zaccheo, head of Unit, Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development of the European Union. The event will be broadcast live via streaming on YouTube tomorrow, Tuesday, January 25, starting at 3:00 p.m. CET.
