The project focusing on advanced forensic methods between Spain and Turkey provided training in calligraphic proficiency in the Arabic and Chinese alphabets

Within the framework of the project, several workshops were held based on the study of calligraphic expertise in the Arabic and Chinese scripts, aimed at specialists whose mother tongue is written using Latin script. Calligraphy is a branch of criminal science that studies handwritten graphic signs, components of writing and/or signatures to determine whether they are authentic, taking into account their authorship and any possible tampering.
Its purpose is to determine the authorship of a handwritten script, generally in Latin script. However, the need to study forensic calligraphy in other scripts is becoming increasingly frequent.
During the presentation, specialists from the Civil Guard addressed handwriting in non-native languages, giving a general overview of the national and international situation in relation to the harmonisation of the handwriting analysis protocols applied to native and non-native scripts.
A review of the characteristics of the scripts of two non-native languages, Arabic and Chinese was also carried out and the work protocol to follow in their examination was determined.
The activity was aimed at experts from the Forensic Department of the Gendarmerie (JKDB), the Police Forensic Laboratory of the (KPL) and the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK), who accessed the virtual training given by two experts from the Spanish Guardia Civil’s Graphology Department.
From 2019 to 2022, this project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the FIIAPP, has aimed to increase the efficiency of forensic sciences and judicial procedures in Turkey.
