Climate financing and cooperation mechanisms with Cuba

International cooperation plays a key role in the global effort to meet the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Working together is essential to face challenges such as climate change and the transition towards a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions. International organisations and agencies have progressively increased the resources allocated to financing and investment in the sector with a view to achieving the commitments of the Paris Agreement. However, the variety of mechanisms and funds available is so wide that it is sometimes difficult to identify the appropriate financing flows and procedures that ensure access to each.  

Through the “EU-Cuba Experience Exchange Project for the promotion of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in Cuba”, financed by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP, detailed mapping has been prepared on the cooperation and financing mechanisms available with Cuba for the energy sector.  

Cuba has already participated in several international cooperation projects in terms of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. Nevertheless, it is important to update Cuban management and public personnel on the current context of financing, on previous successful experiences, application methodologies and ultimately, to present new opportunities that broaden the spectrum of cooperation in the sector. To this end, on October 13 and 14, the online workshop on “International cooperation mechanisms in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency” will be held, presenting the most relevant findings of the study carried out over the past four months. 

The workshop will serve to introduce the management personnel and specialists of Cuban organisations directly involved in the sector to the detailed mapping that will identify and resolve doubts regarding the main financial support mechanisms (bilateral, multilateral and university cooperation) that could be used in the country to promote the “Policy for the prospective development of renewable sources and the efficient use of energy” that is already underway in the country.
