Support for the production of clean energy in Cuba

The fight against climate change involves adopting energy efficiency measures. This implies consuming less energy and promoting renewable sources. For Cuba this is a priority, as reflected in the recently approved Policy for the prospective development of renewable sources and the efficient use of energy. In this document, Cuba sets itself the goal that by 2030 24% of generated energy will come from renewable sources.   

Along these lines, the Cuba Renovables project, funded by the European Union and managed by FIIAPP, is supporting CubaRon, a producer of large rum brands in Cuba, in the transformation of its industry and in contributing to the protection of the environment. Work is being done on a project for the production of clean energy by treating wastewater with biogas production. It is estimated that in the process more than 16 thousand tons of CO2 will be emitted into the atmosphere. 

These innovations have several objectives focused on reducing the impact of industrial activity on the environment. On the one hand, it will reduce waste and discharges in coastal areas from industrial production processes, through the treatment of wastewater. On the other, it will supply four of its industries with clean energy, generated through the production of biogas from its own waste. Finally, and as a third positive aspect, the generation of natural fertiliser will be achieved, coming from the digestate of the biogas itself.  

To support Cuba in promoting environmental sustainability, Cuba Renovables and CubaRon are collaborating mainly with training activities for specialists and supporting the entire project implementation process.
