Without proper planning, long-term commitments run the risk of falling by the wayside. Although there are ten years left during which to achieve the goals in the Agenda 2030, this is the pivotal moment if we are to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) adopted in 2015.
The UN has identified three key lines of action to speed things up during the Decade of Action: Mobilise and raise awareness among the world’s population; more ambitious actions and policies supported by firm commitments; and innovative solutions. Before the pandemic, the need to intensify efforts to achieve the SDGs was already clear, but now the situation has become even more critical. COVID19 has been an unexpected obstacle for the Agenda 2030 and may jeopardise compliance, according to the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020.
The dawn of the Decade of Action coincides with a time of important strategic changes for European and Spanish cooperation, in which the FIIAPP is involved. The European Union is in the process of adopting the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027. Together with the programming exercise, the new NDICI instrument will be key to determining the work of the European Union and its partner countries in the coming years.
Spain is also in the throes of a key cooperation process. The new Foreign Action Strategy was recently launched to foster multilateralism, and climate and feminist diplomacy. Spanish institutions are also working on a new Spanish cooperation law.
FIIAPP is addressing the Decade of Action by drawing up a new Strategic Plan. The Foundation has ratified its commitment to international alliances and public technical cooperation for sustainable development, strengthening its commitment to administrations to comply with the 2030 Agenda. With SDG 16 (Peace, justice and strong institutions) and 17 (Partnerships to achieve the Goals) at the core of its actions, the FIIAPP aims to assist in the improvement of public systems to benefit citizens.
